Summertime Saga WIP Progress,
Development Update & Release Status

The v21 series isn’t a normal patch. It’s a full engine rebuild — and understanding that distinction changes how you read every progress update that comes out of the dev team.

What the Tech Update Actually Is

A lot of longtime players expected the WIP branch to instantly replace the old stable build, but that’s not really how this transition has worked. The tech update is a ground-up reconstruction of Summertime Saga — new engine, new resolution, new UI, new asset passes. Almost nothing from the original codebase carried over cleanly.

The result is a game that looks and performs significantly better, but is still catching up to the content library that took the original build years to accumulate. That tension — better foundation, less content right now — is the core thing to understand before evaluating any WIP build.

Here’s what changed at the engine level:

  • Resolution and aspect ratio — the game moved to full 16:9 widescreen HD, which is a noticeable upgrade on any modern Android device and especially on tablets
  • Engine — rebuilt on Ren’Py 8, replacing the original Flash-era architecture
  • UI and navigation — menus, the town map, inventory, and the hint system were all redesigned
  • Art — locations and character assets are being redrawn or updated as they’re migrated, not just ported as-is
  • Guidance systems — the dialogue hint and mimic systems are now more functional, which reduces the dead-end confusion that frustrated players in older builds

Each public build in the WIP series represents another batch of content successfully brought into this new environment. The numbered builds aren’t arbitrary — they mark genuine development milestones, even when individual releases feel smaller than expected.

Current Build — What’s Actually Playable

As of the most recent public release in May 2026, the WIP branch includes the following confirmed content:

Main Story Progress

The core narrative now runs through the Igor and Dimitri mob visit arc — the full pizza prep quest chain, the confrontation sequences, and the pizza-making minigame are all in and functional. This represents a meaningful chunk of the main story that wasn’t available in earlier WIP builds.

Character Routes Currently Reimplemented

  • Jenny — updated assets, corrected nighttime scene tinting, nightmare sequence fixes applied
  • Debbie — two full events now available: the expanded mall trip (more build-up stages, extra cutscenes, pregnancy support) and a new bed event with multiple progression stages
  • Miss Bissette, Miss Okita, Miss Ross — full routes reimplemented in the new engine
  • Judith — mini-route restored with updated character art

Other Notable Additions Across Recent Builds

  • X-ray system introduced
  • Improved dialogue hints — noticeably reduces route confusion for players who struggle to trigger events
  • Retooled mimic system
  • Performance improvements, particularly on Android
  • New locations added to the town map

The May 2026 release specifically added new scenes, story progression, and further route improvements on top of the groundwork laid in earlier builds. Some features are still flagged as incomplete and will continue expanding.

What’s Still Missing

Compared to the old stable build, several things are still absent from the current WIP branch. This is the part most players are actually searching for when they look up progress updates.

  • Roxxy, Diane, Mia, Eve — four of the most-played routes from the original build are not yet reimplemented
  • Full audio — the complete audio suite exists in the stable version but is being restored to the WIP branch incrementally
  • Full translations — language support is more complete in the old build; the new branch is still catching up
  • Prom route and full harem system — the mechanics exist at the engine level but full content isn’t there yet
  • Late-game content depth — total playtime in the WIP branch is still shorter than the original, by design
None of this is a bug or oversight. It’s the honest state of a game being rebuilt properly rather than rushed. The old stable build still has its complete content library intact for anyone who needs it — the two branches serve different purposes right now.

How Far Along Is Development?

There’s no official percentage published anywhere. Community figures like “86% complete” are player-generated estimates — usually calculated by counting available routes against the full roster from the original build. They’re rough proxies at best, and they don’t account for new content being added alongside the migration.

What the build history does show is a consistent pattern of progress:

Summertime Saga WIP Build Timeline
BuildApprox. ReleaseWhat It Added
wip.4468May 2024Engine foundation, Jenny route, new UI, widescreen rollout
wip.5003Mid 2024Route reimplementations begin, new events added
wip.6440Late 2024Debbie’s arc completed, 9th public milestone
wip.6859February 2026Mob visit arc complete, Judith restored, x-ray system
wip.7164May 2026New scenes, route improvements, performance and bug fixes

The structural work — engine, map, core UI, art pipeline — appears to be largely in place based on recent public updates. The remaining work is primarily content: getting more character routes migrated and adding the new material being developed alongside them.

Public builds have been releasing roughly every two months, with Patreon supporters getting access earlier. That cadence has held reasonably well across the WIP series, though individual builds vary in scope.

Which Build Should You Actually Play?

This comes down to what you’re looking for right now.

The WIP branch makes sense if you’ve already completed the original stable version and want to experience the newer content as it arrives — particularly Debbie’s expanded route, the updated Jenny scenes, and the mob story arc. The HD presentation is also a genuine improvement if visual quality matters to you.
If you’re doing a first playthrough and want access to the full character roster without hitting walls where routes aren’t available yet, the original stable build still delivers more total content in one package. It lacks the visual upgrades and newer systems, but it’s complete in a way the WIP branch isn’t yet.

Both are valid choices. The WIP branch isn’t meant to replace the original right now — it’s the future of the game being built in public, one release at a time.

Save Files and Switching Between Builds

One thing that catches a lot of players off guard: save files from the original stable build do not transfer cleanly into the WIP branch. The engine rebuild changed the save structure enough that old saves either won’t load or throw errors in the new version.

If you’re moving to the WIP branch for the first time, start a fresh save. Keep your old save folder backed up separately — don’t let a new install overwrite it. For players updating between WIP builds (not switching from the old stable), moving saves is more straightforward since the structure is consistent within the v21 series.

It’s worth reading through the save backup and transfer guide before any major update. Reinstalling over a previous WIP build is generally fine as long as you’ve backed up your save directory first — but better to take two minutes and be sure than restart a route from scratch.

What the Next Build Will Likely Focus On

Based on community discussion and what’s currently absent from the WIP branch, Roxxy and Diane are the most-requested routes not yet reimplemented — both were central to the original build’s content. It’s reasonable to expect those to be prioritized in upcoming releases, though recent updates suggest the team is also expanding main story content past the current endpoint.

Audio restoration and further translation work are ongoing in parallel. The hint and guidance systems continue to be refined based on player feedback, which has been a consistent focus across recent builds.

No confirmed release window has been announced for the next public build. The team works on a when-it’s-ready basis rather than fixed dates, which is consistent with how the WIP series has operated throughout.
