BlueStacks 10 runs Android 11 internally and works without issues, but doesn’t offer meaningful advantages over version 5 for a Renpy game. Some users report slightly longer initial load times. Either version works — there’s no strong reason to switch if you already have one installed.

MuMu Player 12

MuMu Player 12 has become a reliable option on Windows 11. It uses Android 12 internally, runs Renpy apps without additional configuration, and handles the scoped storage permission model that causes issues on some newer Android bases. Worth considering if the other options are giving you trouble.

Nox Player

Nox Player works but comes with caveats. On Windows 11, Nox can conflict with Hyper-V if it’s enabled — particularly on machines running WSL2, Docker, or Windows Sandbox alongside it. If scene transitions are noticeably slow: make sure the emulator’s virtual disk file is stored on an SSD rather than an HDD. Most emulators default to the C: drive, which is typically an SSD on modern machines — but if you’ve changed the install location to a secondary HDD, moving it back makes a meaningful difference.

Crashes Mid-Scene

Crashes during scenes usually point to one of three things:

  • RAM allocation too low — increase to at least 2GB in the emulator’s settings
  • GPU driver conflict — update your GPU drivers and set the emulator to use your dedicated GPU if you have one, not integrated graphics

Windows 11 Specific Issues

Windows 11 introduced tighter Hyper-V integration, which creates problems for emulators that rely on their own virtualisation layer rather than using Hyper-V directly.

Nox Player is the most affected. On Windows 11 machines with Hyper-V, WSL2, or Virtual Machine Platform enabled, Nox may fail to start or crash immediately after launch. The workaround is either disabling those Windows features — not always practical — or switching to an emulator that supports Hyper-V natively.

LDPlayer 9 and BlueStacks 5 both added Hyper-V support and handle Windows 11 cleanly in most configurations. If you’re on Windows 11 with virtualisation features active, these two are the safer options.

One Windows 11 setting worth adjusting: right-click the emulator executable → Properties → Compatibility → check “Run in high DPI settings” and set scaling to “Application.” This prevents Windows from applying its own DPI scaling on top, which can cause blurry rendering and slightly degraded input response.

Windows 11’s memory compression can also cause intermittent stuttering on RAM-constrained machines. If you’re seeing freezes that don’t appear emulator-specific, check Task Manager → Performance → Memory and watch whether the “Compressed” value is climbing high during sessions.
